Rumor & Innuendo

Chaos in the zebra pen. OK, refs at the next level don’t wear stripes anymore. But you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout. NBA. FBI. Tim Donaghy. Bettin’ on ball games. David Stern’s nightmare. Privately, pro ballers have been complaining more vehemently by the season about how unfair officiating has been, how it changes the outcome of games. Sources advise the Donaghy situation will turn into a hornet’s nest, that there is far more subversive favoritism goin’ down than apparent, and zebras sooner or later will be braying at their fellows to save their own butts.

Chaos in the dog pound. You know what I’m talkin’ ’bout. NFL. Federal indictments. Michael Vick. Killin’ dogs for the fun of it all. Bobby Petrino’s nightmare. Not so privately, NFL muckety-mucks are struggling to deal with what I shall call Bengal Syndrome, i.e. lots of players getting arrested for violent and/or illegal acts. I’m advised by someone who might actually know that the league office is seriously conflicted about how and when to act against Vick. And other scofflaws for that matter. Truth is, most NFLers aren’t tea-at-3 while reading Jane Austen kinda guys. The game gets more violent by the season. So, too, the players. Good luck, Roger Goodell.
Take the $$$, make your choice. You’re a big-time football coach with a future bright enough to wear shades. Fall practice is about to begin. Who would you rather have taking snaps under center — Brian Brohm or Michael Vick? Or Joey Harrington? Just wondering.

Let me stand next to your Fire.
Hmm, well, truth be told, not enough folks around these parts are willing to do that. You know what I’m talkin’ ’bout. Louisville Fire. Fake summertime football. Losing money. Investors needed or it is Adios, amigos. While I certainly don’t wish ill for Will Wolford, a homeboy who has invested in his community, reality is that arena football is an ersatz sport, generating little interest at either the minor and “major” league levels.

The Open. Pity the fools who don’t watch golf majors if Tiger’s not contending. And they are aplenty. The final day at Carnoustie was fun.
