JCPS students at three different schools staged walkouts today in protest of the looming possibility of Roe v Wade being overturned.

Students at Atherton, duPont Manual and Ballard high schools all walked out, according to JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan.

The protests followed a leak on Monday of a draft Supreme Court majority opinion that would overturn Roe v Wade. Kentucky has a “trigger law” that would automatically make abortion illegal if Roe v Wade were overturned.

duPont Manual’s student newspaper, the Manual RedEye, posted a picture and a video on Twitter from the scene, showing a flood of participating students cheering as they walk back inside the building. Some were chanting “My body, my choice” and holding posters.

Online commenters praised the move.

At Atherton, Callahan said, students walked out to the school’s interior courtyard. Some students left the building entirely but were let back in a side door by another student.

“Those students became disruptive, running through the auditorium during a class, and were told to exit the building,” she said. “It is JCPS policy that once a student leaves the building without permission, they cannot come back into the school.”
