Perhaps more than most, Softcheque present a musical cypher. Seldom am I at such a profound loss for words to describe music, submitted here as a positive. Suppose you can imagine a band that simultaneously blends the low-key swing of French pop, like Serge Gainsbourg, or even Stereolab, with that kind of subtle creeping melancholy of Jarboe an operatic flourish, meant here in the most literal of senses, added in for good measure. The compositions flow naturally, and feel organic in nature, and the album skews a bit quieter even than their previous release, which evokes a sleepy vibe, that kind of feel you get on a foggy morning when youve got a lot on your mind.
