Life Is Still Beautiful
Life heralds the return of The Foxery, a band of locals tinkering with the conventions of indie rock. Coming across like a seesawing collage of Child-era Manchester Orchestra and the distorted post-hardcore intensity of Slint, The Foxery bring heartfelt songs that get a huge boost from being formed around alternating soft-loud dynamics. “The Widower” allows Calvin Fackler’s voice to shine amid wandering guitars that find purpose after he professes a need to “keep your feet on the ground and your heart in the clouds. Forgive today and let them carry us away.” — the gang-shout on “away” a kind of distorted, drone-laced cry of unease and desire. Though they wear their influences on their sleeves, the end result is an unexpected merger of styles that rises above the copycats.
