The trio of Yo La Tengo are professors in exploring the range of indie rock. Let us recall 2009’s Popular Songs, a record divided by gorgeous, textural tunes and its lengthy second half that sinks and steamrolls to a close. Their 13th studio album, Fade, invests in a more confined time space with no detours. Owe this to a fresh producer, John McEntire of Tortoise and The Sea and Cake. While they don’t try to sound extraordinary, it’s easy to get hung up on these tender love songs to the soul. Additions of violin and brass aid the dreamy upswing that drifts straight through to closer “Before We Run.” Fade is a renewed take on the band that has always been unrefined.
