Shotguns

BY DAN BARBERCHECK

startled doves rose

booms echoed crisply

over the dead hills

a cold wind came up

and sent the yellow leaves

scurrying

before our shiny shoes

the message on the phone

said not to call back

we walked

to where the gravel

turned to new asphalt

and the shotguns

sounded

like calls for help
