Louisville and Kentucky meet again Saturday at L&N Stadium, closing the regular season with a Governor’s Cup matchup defined as much by attrition as rivalry heat.
In addition to carrying a lengthy list of ailments to important offensive playmakers, Louisville comes into the game hurting from a 38-6 loss at SMU, the worst loss of the Jeff Brohm era. Leading receivers Chris Bell and Caullin Lacy, starting linebacker Antonio Watts, quarterback Miller Moss, and the Cardinals’ top three running backs (Isaac Brown, Keyjuan Brown, and Duke Watson) will all be absent.
It’s not much better for the Wildcats. With many edge rushers, tight end Josh Kattus, and several defensive backs injured, the Wildcats’ defensive depth chart is still lacking following their 45–17 defeat at Vanderbilt. But Cutter Boley, a rookie quarterback who has completed about 72% of his passes in the last six games, has provided late-season consistency.
Both programs desperately need a response. Kentucky needs a victory to qualify for the bowl; Louisville has lost three in a row. Before Louisville reclaimed the Governor’s Cup last season with a 41–14 victory in Lexington, the Wildcats held it for five consecutive years (2018–23).
