DOCTOR
WHO MEGASET 1
2008;
$499.95, UR
Halleh-freakin-lu-yah!
Weve been praying for a complete set of Tom Baker Dr. Whos for
years, and this is as close as it has come so far. Twenty-seven
episodes on 41 discs, including the very early Dalek Invasion of
Earth, the excellent Horror of Fang Rock and, our favorite
episode, Talons of Weng-Chiang. Also contains all of the
multi-doctor special adventures and key episodes of both the Daleks
and the Cybermen. Shop locally for the best price and a complete
litany of contents and special features. Thank you, God!
FLAWLESS
2008;
$26.95, PG-13
Why
this wasnt one of the biggest movies of the past year is beyond
us: A Hitchcockian crime drama with lowly Cockney janitor Michael
Caine seducing disgruntled diamond exec Demi Moore into a jewel heist
in early 60s London. No explosions or car chases, just a damn
good, rock-solid drama about people you come to care about.
JEKYLL
AND HYDE … TOGETHER AGAIN
1982;
$14.95, R
Possibly
the worst movie of the 80s can you even imagine what that
means? but we still love this over-the-top comic outing by
wild-eyed Mark Blankfield as the gentle Dr. Jekyll/party-crazed Hyde,
with help from Bess Armstrong and Krista Errickson as the girl with
the foreign object stuck in her V-A-G-I-N-A. Oh, yeah!
Now, you remember! We must have seen this 1,000 times. A few
soundtrack changes since the original, but still a must-own.
MAMAS
BOY
2007;
$27.95, PG-13
Jeff
Daniels, Anna Faris, Jon Heder, Diane Keaton, Chris Kerner and Rue
McClanahan … weve already wasted too much time. Just plain
sucks. Next.
MANNIX:
THE FIRST SEASON
1967;
$49.95, UR
Mike
Connors was outstanding in this cool, exciting and sexy detective
show from back in the day. More realistic than todays crop of
bloody shootouts and exploding cars, this was intelligent TV that
excited on both a mental and physical plane. Now available on DVD for
the first time: six discs with all 24, one-hour episodes co-starring
Joseph Campanella, that killer theme song and enough bonus goodies to
fill the trunk of Joe Mannixs silver Olds Toronado roadster
(custom designed by George Barris, of course).
MEET
THE SPARTANS
2008;
$29.95-39.95, PG-13
Latest
in the quickie blockbuster movie spoof genre, this one taking
on 300,” Ghost Rider, Rocky Balboa,
Transformers, Paris Hilton and at least 300 other targets.
Diedrich Bader, Kevin Sorbo and Method Man lead the cast.
SEMI-PRO
2008;
$28.95-$39.95, R
Will
Ferrells latest. Were not big fans of the guy, but we kinda
liked this cockeyed look back at the 70s and the frantic,
do-anything-for-attention ABA. Costars Woody Harrelson, Andre
Benjamin and Will Arnett.
STUMP
THE BAND
2006;
$19.95, UR
A
completely unredeemable no-budget comic/horror mashup of punk music,
nasty babes and axe-wielding, foot-collecting deviates in the
backwoods of Wisconsin. May be hard to find, but worth every
gut-busting moment.
SURVIVING
EDEN
2004;
$19.95, UR
This
fun little no-budget comedy has been around awhile, but keeps popping
up as reality TV continues to infect the land. A documentary film
crew follows a game-show winner to see what effect wealth and
exposure has on his life. Prescient and priceless with Michael Panes,
Cheri Oteri, Peter Dinklage and a host of TV faces.
THE
ANDROMEDA STRAIN MINISERIES
2008;
$26.95, UR
We
liked this surprisingly solid if largely ignored mini based
on Michael Crichtons seminal novel. Benjamin Bratt plays the
central doctor fighting off a deadly, mutating infection from outer
space. Worth checking out; about 21?2 hours on two discs.
THE
EYE
2008;
$29.95-$39.95, PG-13
Aaaah,
Jessica Alba … do we need to go on? OK, heaven-sent Jessie stars as
a blind woman who receives an ocular transplant, only to find it
comes with ghostly images and otherworldly terrors. An Americanized
remake of the far scarier HK import Gin-Gwai, it nonetheless
produces enough thrills for its PG-13 target audience. A good date
flick.
THE
ONION MOVIE
2008;
$26.95, UR
We
wish that we could say this is the movie weve all been wanting
a slam-bang satire of over-the-top foolishness riffing on American
news culture but, alas, its just not up to its dead-tree
namesake. Long-time Onion editors Robert Siegel and Todd Hanson have
perfected print spoof-journalism, but they dont have a clue how to
plot a movie. Dont get us wrong: There are some excellent gags and
side-splitting moments, but on the whole, it just didnt live up to
our high expectations. Worth checking out, just dont get your
hopes up.
TWISTED:
A BALLOONAMENTARY
2007;
$24.95, UR
An
astounding PBS doc on … wait for it … balloon animals! Simply
magic as it follows the history, uses and competitive industry of
twisting balloons for fun and profit (one woman uses them to get out
of her trailer park and go to med school). Includes an animated
segment by Jon Stewart of The Daily Show that simply HAS to be
seen.
VINCE
