Mahonia

After eight years in the heart of NuLu, plant and home goods shop Mahonia is relocating to St. Matthews’ Woodlawn Shopping Center. The move, set for mid-October, comes after declining sales and infrastructure challenges made the downtown location increasingly difficult to maintain.

The decision was also influenced by the lack of parking and the continuing streetscape development in East Market, which has prevented customers from accessing the store for weeks at a time.

Masterson and her husband bought the store three years ago after it first opened in 2016. From a single plant at home to a flourishing store with workshops and a wide variety of plants, she characterized Mahonia as a creative outlet.

A larger layout, greater parking, and easy access to busy roads between St. Matthews, Indian Hills, and the East End are all features of the new St. Matthews site, which is located at 291 N. Hubbards Lane, suite 165. After the last day at the NuLu store on October 11, Mahonia planned a soft opening for October 15. During the NuLu closing, there is a 20% relocation sale.

Due to delays and frequent pauses during important events, Louisville’s $12 million East Market Streetscape project has taken longer than anticipated. This relocation demonstrates the project’s wider effects. The project, which started in the summer of 2024, is to enhance parking, bike lanes, sidewalks and traffic flow. It should be finished by the time of the NuLu Halloween Fest on October 25.

Although locals and business owners are anxious for the construction to be finished, they are still optimistic that the community will eventually gain from the upgrades.

Mahonia’s new St. Matthews hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
