This $1.3 million Anchorage home used to be part of bourbon baron Isaac Bernheims estate. Yep, that Bernheim. The one who created Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest.
Turns out, he got his love of nature from roaming the woods of his once 300 acre estate in Anchorage. That estate included this gardeners cottage, built in 1870. At one point, Bernheim and his wife dreamed of turning the property into a public arboretum. But after the death of Amanda Bernheim in 1922, Isaac Bernheim sold the land. (He later bought the reserve in Bullitt and Nelson counties that we know as Bernheim.)
In the meantime, his former gardeners cottage became a private home, featuring exposed wooden beams on the inside and decorated gables on the outside.
