Spalding University has been announced as one of 12 universities to be awarded a grant to host Summer Bridge programs for students pursuing degrees linked to healthcare. Spalding will receive $56,300 of the $529,801.00 that will be distributed among the universities.

In collaboration with local healthcare providers, the summer bridge program will include practical exercises, shadowing opportunities, and career training. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, health science, natural science, and athletic training staff will provide hands-on experiences in the afternoons. In addition to giving potential college students significant exposure to college life, the program offers opportunities for them to investigate jobs in healthcare. The award includes up to two necessary classes and pays the cost of attendance for residents of Kentucky who take part in the summer program.

“We are honored to receive the 2025 CPE Healthcare Career Summer Bridge Program grant. Spalding’s summer bridge program prepares students to excel academically and gain early access to college life,” said Dr. Katherine Walker-Payne, director for the Center for Accessibility and Learning Equity and Academic Success, in a recent press release. “This grant supports our mission to connect students with meaningful, in-demand careers. By providing foundational knowledge and strategies for success, we help students build the skills and confidence to thrive in college and their future careers in healthcare.”

The grant is intended to help underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income students. The monies were granted by the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) using federal, state, and municipal fiscal recovery funding. It has been demonstrated that previous summer bridge program participants do well in college. In order to accomplish their academic and personal objectives, more than 95% of previous participants continue their education, maintain high GPAs, and work with a long-term success coach.
