Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and municipal authorities recently broke ground on the $1.3 million makeover of Ballard Park in Smoketown. The redevelopment, inspired by substantial community feedback over the past 14 months, will include a timber playground, picnic pavilion, workout stations, and a basketball court.

Funded by an $850,000 city budget and $400,000 in private contributions gathered by the Parks Alliance of Louisville, the project is the first full-scale renovation under the Parks For All Action Plan, which aims to improve parks in historically neglected districts.

“This park has been thoughtfully designed with residents’ needs in mind, so we know it’s going to be a popular spot and help create an even stronger sense of community,” said Mayor Greenberg in a press release.

As renovations begin, citizens can vote on a proposed name change and submit input on respecting the park’s heritage by visiting parksalliancelou.org/ballard-park through April 21.
