Kentucky is getting another multi-billion investment toward making the state a hotspot for manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles.
The Japanese electric vehicle battery technology company Envision AESC is investing $2 billion into building a plant in Bowling Green, Gov. Andy Beshear announced on Wednesday, bringing 2,000 high-value jobs with it.
The gigafactory will be located in the Kentucky Transpark in Warren County, producing battery cells and modules for electric vehicles for multiple global automotive manufactures.
As the industry advances, Kentucky is going to lead it, Beshear said at the announcement.
Bowling Green Mayor Todd Alcott said that the investment will have a significant impact on the area.
The scale of this project is like nothing our community has ever seen before, Alcott said. This announcement boasts the largest investment amount, job creation and facility size in our history. Its phenomenal for the future of our region.
This is the second recent major investment in the state concerning batteries for electric vehicles. In September, Ford announced a $5.8 billion plan to build twin battery plants for electric vehicles in Hardin County, which, like Bowling Green, also sits near Interstate 65.
