Thunder over Louisville: an anti-sonnet

BY FREDERICK SMOCK

Did the sudden roar of fireworks
spook the dogs into breaking their chains?
Did the jets swooping low over the river
in a patriotic display of noise frissonable
drive them out into the streets,
dogs from all over town, their aural nerves
mushed, haywire?

How strange it is, anymore, to see dogs
loose, wandering around,
attached to no owners, on their own.
It used to be such a common sight
in my childhood, I didn’t even think about it.
Dogs — just going about their business,
their simple days.
