While there is nothing glacial about Danish punk/hardcore band Iceage, their name seems strangely appropriate, as their music is crushing and harsh more often than not. There is a youthful vigor in their sophomore release that propels the album along at a frenzied pace. That it can be labeled a hardcore album is in no doubt, although there are a number of moments of melody and subtlety that make for surprising turns on an otherwise eager record. For example, on “Morals,” the band leads with a subdued dirge focusing on the interplay between guitars, piano and vocal before the chorus begins and they renew their breakneck tempo. Still, Nothing is rife with blistering numbers like “It Might Hit First” that strike fast and leaving you wanting more. It is this manic energy pervading Nothing that propels Iceage to eminently listenable heights.
