In the tradition of such independent troubadours as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and John Prine (who makes an appearance on the album), Winding Highways is a collection of classic Americana. These are songs with little ornamentation that utilize high-lonesome singing and clever, wistful lyricism. “Bound to Lovin’ You” is classic revival honky tonk. Clark sings, The gypsy side of me is a devil/Sometimes he wears my highway shoes, a wink and a nod to Kris Kristofferson’s “The Silver-Tongued Devil.” The cover of the Paul Siebel classic “Louise” is dangerously tender and, simply put, heartbreaking. This is a beautiful album with appearances by Jerry Jeff Walker, Louisville’s own Tim Krekel, Sam Bush, Kinky Friedman and Robin and Linda Williams. Mickey Clark performs May 1 at The Rudyard Kipling (422 W. Oak. St., 636-1311).
