Twenty-three-year-old Aly Spaltro was working at a video rental store in Maine, writing music each night when she was done with her late shift. Rather than shopping around for labels like in the old days, she recorded rough versions of her songs and gave them away for free at the counters of both her video store and a record store next door. Next thing she knew, Spaltro’s spunky songs were getting attention across the northeast. She gained enough traction to record Ripely Pine, an eclectic album with everything from quiet, Feist-y moments to the dirty garage rock of “Mezzanine.” It’s a testament that, these days, anyone with talent and some innovative thinking can find a way to share their heart with the world.
