Bit-crushed noise turns into four-on-the floor 808 beats midway through Void’s opening track “Ghost-Tro,” marking a shift from fuzzed-out ambient to a boom bap style of production. Each of those components is given the space and time to breathe. The sub-bass throughout the album booms, a heavy throb that sets and holds the tone. This is hip-hop by way of Nine Inch Nails, with a bit of noise-rap pioneers such as Dälek. Still, with Void, there is more in common with producers such as Clams Casino or DROPXLIFE, who use synths and found sounds to create a mood. These are grizzly tracks that balance punishing blows with hushed white noise, making for a tense experience. —Syd Bishop
