Matthew Fogle seems to be a pretty talented guy — he has a solid voice and an obvious ear for melodies — but I hit a snag on Plea: 491. Gospel can be beautiful and personal. It can also come off bland, disingenuous and repetitive. If God is a giant, omni-present being, maker of heaven and earth, can anyone find something new to say beyond shallow platitudes? I can’t believe in the 2,000 years since Jesus Christ, no one has been able to come up with anything more to say besides, “Hey, God, you’re great.” So to Matthew Fogle and all aspiring Christian songwriters, here’s some advice my editor at LEO has always given me: When writing about your Lord and Savior (or anything for that matter), “Find an angle.” Matthew Fogle performs Wednesdays this month at Old Louisville Coffeehouse.
