Planetary Overdrive specializes in gritty, country-adjacent, hook-heavy rock-n-roll that’s rough around the edges, like if Cory Branan started a hair metal band. With their latest, the five-song record, Manual Override, the band spends their time with open roads and endless trouble, from existential dread to everything just falling apart. Sometimes it can be a bit over the top in its rebel without a cause swagger, but it has a lovability about it — sort of how The Darkness (yes, the “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” band) was able to spin their wild-eyed antics into underrated gold. But, overall, Manual Override is heart-on-its-sleeve visceral power that sort of lives in its own little corner, doing it’s own thing. And I respect that. —Scott Recker
