Alanna Fugate has a wonderfully soulful voice that only seems to hint at the agony hidden beneath her sometimes angry, sometimes sad, but always pain-drenched lyrics. First off: With 16 tracks, Pink Elephants feels like a bargain of an album — each song is carefully produced (by Fugate and Kevin Ratterman) with deeply layered arrangements that make each note seem as urgent as the one before it. Cellist Ben Sollee makes his presence well known on the four songs on which he is featured. While she surrounds herself with the best of the best on Pink Elephants, ultimately this is Fugate’s show … with her raw lyrics and voice so sultry and ravaged, she could be singing over the sound of traffic, and songs like “Whiskey Talks” would be no less compelling.
