Carbonatix Pre-Player Loader

On their second effort, we start to see these guys (and gal) hone their abilities. There is no shortage of creative instrumentation here, and when they put their backs into it, as on the energetic, playful “Fiddle Tune” and “Happy Song,” they flourish. Lovers keep walking to and from one another on “First Step” and “Just Begun,” and there’s cool jamming — complimentary, not pejorative — but little lyrical depth. Lethargic melodies make the middle sag, and if weren’t for the vocal power of Cheyenne Mize, “Night After Night” would fall flat. They’re at their best when they keep the energy high and their thoughts aimed at experimenting, as on the aptly named “Rumba.”
