Saxophonist Wayne Shorter has played the Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival many times with many different musicians. This DVD captures the full 1996 set, which deftly mixes fusion and post-bop jazz, and adds 45 minutes of bonus tracks from 1991 and 1992 featuring Herbie Hancock. Shorter switches back and forth from tenor to soprano, sometimes in a single song. His ’96 lineup was James Beard (keyboards), David Gilmore (guitar), Alphonso Johnson (bass) and Rodney Holmes (drums). Opener “On the Milky Way Express” has a slow, intense buildup with solo space for bass, piano and guitar. “At the Fair” finds Shorter in abstract mode over funky rhythms. “Over Shadow Hill Way” is high-energy fusion with a ripping guitar solo. The bonus tracks make me wish the entire ’91 and ’92 sets would be released.
