Let’s Go to Baba’s is the soaring second album from Chicago (by way of Louisville) collective Mittens on Strings. And this might be one of the most original records to come down the pipeline this year. Production is lavish, arrangements layered, with angelic, tight harmonies. There’s an alluring recklessness here — not so much machismo or eccentric experimentation, more like crossing the street without looking both ways.
On “Big Brother,” the interplay between bouncing guitars and regal horns brings to mind an old world we all tend to forget, where we don’t have to be adults if we don’t want to. The irresistible sense of wonder, innocence and naiveté the band weaves throughout is the string that ties these mittens together.
