The first thing you’ll notice about Led by Love is its clarity. Rhody’s happy melodies and soft voice pour out of speakers in HD. It’s clear he has studied the unique sound of Kentucky Folk to technical extremes — his singing style prowess is matchless, his chords are divine, and his tall tales are some of the most entertaining and authentic. After such soulful songs as “Old D-28” (a personal reflection on his closest musical companion) and “Life’s Too Long” (an interesting musical perspective on depression), Rhody takes up a hymn on “I’ll Bid My Heart Be Still.” This a capella rendering is as tear-jerking as it is striking to hear near the end of a folk album. Psalms repeatedly request that a joyful noise be made, and Love certainly encapsulates the sound of rejoicing.
