FACT: The last Superchunk full-length came out in 2001. It (Here’s to Shutting Up) was fucking great.

FACT: 2001 feels like a long time ago. Probably because it was.

The long wait for new material has ended with the release of this soon-to-be classic EP. Hell, even the normally eye-roll inducing “acoustic demo” is great. The rest of the record is just as good. The opener, “Learned to Surf,” starts off with a jangly Southern rock guitar intro, then into that trademark Superchunk stomp. The chorus has the breathless delivery that Mac McCaughan has perfected over the years. But somehow it pulls off these familiar elements without coming across as stale. And that, to me, is the magic of Superchunk.
