Gabe Close sounds as if he’s been exorcising a lifetime of Southern rock and blues influences to make his debut, Learning to Wait for the Dawn. While more polished and pristine than I generally like my blues-rock, ultimately that’s nothing to slight him on. The songs are catchy, his voice solid, the arrangements tight. Not to mention that he’s backed throughout by Dennis Ledford, Don Watson and Scott Lankford, who hail from Nervous Melvin & The Mistakes. “Hadn’t I Been Good to You” is easily one of the better sad tunes I’ve heard in a while. With jangling guitars, Close wants his ex to explain where he went wrong — a question any jilted lover has dared ask at some point. Close’s album release show is Monday, Feb. 15, 9 p.m., at Molly Malone’s (933 Baxter Ave.).
