Its hard to know what to expect with a release from the interminably brilliant Jonathan Glen Wood. Over the last several years, Wood has proven himself a creative force, as a member of Old Baby, a contributor to Freakwater and via his solo work, which covers a vast amount of sonic ground. If the J.G. Wood Ensemble proves anything, its his malleability as an artist and collaborator. As advertised, there are a number of featured players woven in and out of the album in a seamless blend between classic country, western, blues and ambient. Its hauntingly beautiful, filling up so much space with so little effort, while notes never seem out of place or unnecessary.
