We know Jamie Lidell is a master impersonator. He can toss a dart at a decade and emulate the sound, songwriting and texture of that period. Jim showed a forward ’60s flavor, and Multiply echoed, albeit through a club filter. Compass broadened the scope a bit, collaborating with Beck, Grizzly Bear and Feist, but stayed firmly in the soul realm. Jamie Lidell advances to the 1980s, channeling Hall & Oates and other blue-eyed soul greats in ways that still sound fresh (think Chromeo without the douchiness). It’d be easy to lump Lidell into the same basket as lesser-talented karaoke singers and cultural vampires if the songs weren’t so damn catchy. The Dr. John-as-produced-by-Andre 3000 vibe of “Why Ya Why” is worth the 10 bucks by itself. There’s not a clunker in the bunch.
