Benton, Ky., troupe Terrapin Pond is the newest signing to Garden Gate Records, the label run by the Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider, his wife and brother-in-law, but it’s there that any hyper-speed pop allegories end. This is a roots affair, adding to the deep tradition of bands inspired by Music from Big Pink and Pet Sounds, although the Terrapins filter their inspirations through a western Kentucky lens. Shades of old time, bluegrass and contemporary rock show up on 11 songs that, in the grand scheme, register as one long psychedelic sigh. “Fight You In My Dreams” floats through either fog or outer space (take your pick). “Great White North” and “Long Lonesome Train” are wistful and ethereal one minute, but let their rhythmic stomp shine in satisfying, if brief, codas. Engineer and band-member Craig Morris does a fantastic job highlighting the band’s attention to detail, and that matters.
