Pianist Hilton is more prolific than her name recognition might suggest. Indeed, jazz fans may be more familiar with her longstanding trio members, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Nasheet Waits, who display a superb feel for the changing dynamics demanded by Hilton’s work. She is a distinctive composer and player, as displayed on this, her 17th album. All but two of the 11 songs are originals. She revives the Eckstine/Hines classic “Stormy Monday Blues,” revving the tempo, and captures the soulful lyricism of Adele’s “Turning Tables.” Her own compositions range from the fragmented rhythms of “Getaway” to the deeply melodic solo showcase, “Huckleberry Moon.” She and her colleagues artfully blend boogie-woogie with modernism on “Just for Fun,” and later turn ominous on the aptly titled “Emergency.” There is a variety of mood, but unified artfulness here.
