Brian Burton wears many musical hats. Whether he is producing the Black Keys or fulfilling his own muse in Gnarls Barkley or Broken Bells, he always has something interesting to say. This time around, Burton, aka Danger Mouse, is collaborating with James Mercer, frontman for indie darlings The Shins. At first listen, the songs sound light and breezy — the perfect combo for a great summer record. It is upon repeated listening that one is drawn in by Mercer and Mouse’s song craft. “The Ghost Inside” finds Mercer singing in a slight falsetto over top a funky electro-beat. It feels a lot like a Barkley tune. On “Sailing To Nowhere,” Mercer evokes the vocal style of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. So, if you are looking for a light and breezy, yet sophisticated batch of tunes to lose your day in, start here. Danger Mouse has done it again.
