A portmanteau of musicians Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Watter and craft brewery Stillwater Artisanal, Bonnie Stillwatter is a collaboration of music, art and apparently beer. The end result is an all-too-short LP that combines the strengths of each into one neat package. Singer Will Oldham has the most obvious contribution with his vocals, but it’s both his voice and his sensibilities that drive the song into bleak, almost Western territories. There is an overwhelming heaviness that hangs over the lead track, almost unshakeable with its pessimistic social outlook. The b-side is a remix of the first, albeit one strong enough to stand on its own. I cannot attest to the accompanying beer, although anything short of a stout, dark and foreboding, seems to have missed the point.
