New Mother Nature make music that hits all the right beats for an indie band, especially one based in our fair city. The quartet has the chunky riffage of Shipping News but the songwriting acumen of Will Oldham — the music sounds a little loose in that kind of calculated way. The one sticking point could be the singer, who certainly channels his inner Tom Verlaine, or an indie-informed Bob Dylan even, which could be off-putting to some. There is a heaviness that seldom overwhelms, and it’s bluntly obvious that the musicians involved are seasoned, given the restraint. There are a lot of things about this that make for a safe bet, which can be a dubious position. Still, this is comfort music for anyone who loved Touch and Go, and that’s not a bad thing.
