Full of nostalgia, twinkling lights and steaming hot cocoa, these trips include everything from scenic countryside celebrations to big cities that pull out all the stops. From Bardstown to Indiana, these festivals, light shows, exhibits and events are the perfect spot for your next holiday adventure.

So gather the fam, grab some snacks and get cozy in the caravan. It’s time to check out the most memorable Louisville road trips to take this holiday season.

Carmel Christkindlmarkt (Carmel, IN) 2 hours from Louisville November 23 – December 24 Wednesday & Thursday 4-9 p.m. | Friday & Saturday: 12-9 p.m. | Sunday: 12-8 p.m. Step into the festive charm of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, an open-air holiday market inspired by the iconic German Christmas markets, and one of the best holiday day trips to make from Louisville. Here, you can have a festive day browsing handcrafted goods and gifts, including hand-painted mugs and bier steins, while munching on classic Bavarian pretzels. Wash it down with beer or mulled wine, sold from the cutest and most festive traditional wooden huts. While you’re there, skate the outdoor ice rink at the market’s center, marvel at the Christkindlmarkt Express train display set in a miniature European village, and enjoy live entertainment at the Winter Pavilion with performances from talented singers and choirs.
Pokagon Toboggan Run (Angola, IN) 4 hours from Louisville 450 Ln 100 Lake James, Angola, IN Nov. 29, 2024-Feb. 23, 2025 | 10-5:30 p.m. | Saturday & Sunday Extended hours during winter break $20 per hour | $7-9 gate fee per car Zoom down the Pokagon Toboggan Run in Steuben County, Indiana, just four hours from Louisville! This 30-foot tower sends you racing down a quarter-mile track with dips, a 90-foot vertical drop, and speeds up to 40 mph—all in about 30 seconds. Open weekends from late November to late February, the run operates snow or shine. Not up for the fast-paced action? Pokagon State Park offers scenic snow-covered trails, like the 8-mile Hell’s Point Challenge, plus cross-country skiing and ice fishing for a more relaxed adventure.
Santa Claus, IN 1.5 hours from Louisville It would honestly be a little ridiculous to not put Santa Claus, Indiana on this list. Named in 1846 after “Santa Fe” was already taken, this festive destination less than an hour and a half from Louisville is packed to the brim with holiday fun. Don’t miss the Santa Claus Christmas Store, where you can shop for ornaments, collectibles, and holiday treats, or the Santa Claus Museum & Village, full of town history, vintage toys, and letters to Santa. You can even write your own letter at the town’s original post office! You’ll also want to stop by Santa’s Candy Castle for rare candies, handmade sweets, and 35 (!!!) flavors of hot cocoa. Then, end your visit with a drive through the Festival of Lights, featuring nine miles of dazzling displays in Christmas Lake Village.
Reindeer Farm (Bowling Green, KY) 2 hours from Louisville Grab the kiddos and get into the holiday spirit at Kentucky’s only public reindeer farm in Bowling Green! Meet real reindeer up close with a Reindeer Encounter, where you’ll spend 30 minutes inside their pen learning about these magical animals, snapping photos, and making unforgettable memories. These encounters are limited to small groups so be sure to plan ahead. Afterward, explore the farm’s many festive activities, from writing letters to Santa and sipping hot chocolate by the fire to enjoying the indoor playground, bounce house, and petting zoo with mini cows, pigs, alpacas, and more. Don’t forget your camera for photo ops with the sleigh, antique fire truck, and other holiday scenes!
Patti’s Festival of Lights (Grand Rivers, KY) 3 hours from Louisville Every holiday season, Patti’s 1880’s Settlement in Grand Rivers, Kentucky transforms into a holiday wonderland with the Festival of Lights. This annual event features thousands of twinkling lights, festive photo-ops, and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Stroll through the dazzling displays before or after your meal in one of Patti’s festively decorated dining rooms, but be sure to make a reservation—tables fill up fast. Of course, the food at Patti’s is just as memorable as the lights. Dig into hearty favorites like 2” pork chops, thick steaks, and hot sandwiches, paired with flower pot bread and their signature strawberry butter. Don’t skip dessert—the massive pie slices are legendary!
Indianapolis 2 hours from Louisville Indianapolis shines during the holidays. With so many festive activities, this is a great Christmas-time road trip to take from Louisville. At Winterlights at Newfields, over 1.5 million lights illuminate the garden from late November to early January. Stroll through the enchanting Landscape of Light set to the Nutcracker Suite and explore the festive Lilly House. Warm up with hot cocoa, cider, or Sun King Brewing Co.’s Electric Reindeer brown ale at the Winter Market. For a truly unique sight, visit Veal’s Ice Tree, a massive ice sculpture that started as a 1961 accident. This colorful, 35-foot marvel grows throughout winter and lasts until it melts in April. You’ll find another fun sight at Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum, a stunning model train display winding through mini versions of Indianapolis landmarks and iconic national parks. It’s a holiday favorite for all ages!
Christmas In The Park (Elizabethtown, KY) 1 hour from Louisville November 27-January 1 | 6 p.m.–11 p.m. Just a 50-minute drive from Louisville, Elizabethtown’s Christmas in the Park at Freeman Lake Park is a holiday tradition worth the trip. Now in its 30th year, this free drive-thru event features over 100 dazzling light displays reflecting off the lake’s serene waters. The experience is free, but donations are welcomed at the end. After taking in the sights, head to the town’s artificial ice rink for some festive skating fun.
Southern Lights (Lexington, KY) 1 hour from Louisville November 29 – December 31 | 5:30-10:00 p.m. | $35 per car Southern Lights at Lexington’s Kentucky Horse Park is a cherished holiday tradition for families across Kentucky. Open nightly from November 29 to December 31 (except Christmas Day), this three-mile drive-thru light show features over a million twinkling lights, creating a magical experience for all ages. After the driving tour, park and explore the Holiday Village, where admission includes photos with Santa, Santa’s North Pole Mailbox, Animal Land, mini-train rides, and a Bluegrass Miniature Train Display. Grab a snack or enjoy dinner at Tootie’s Peppermint Café before heading home. Tickets are $35 per carload and can be purchased online or at the gate.
My Old Kentucky Dinner Train: North Pole Express (Bardstown, KY) 1 hour from Louisville Weekends in December | Adults $79 | Kids $53 Step back in time aboard the North Pole Express at My Old Kentucky Dinner Train for a festive holiday experience. Arrive early to visit Santa in the decorated 1840s depot and enjoy family activities, including a stunning 12-foot Christmas tree. Whether in matching pajamas or Sunday best, it’s the perfect way to start your adventure. Onboard, enjoy a three-course meal in a 1940s-style dining car while taking in the Kentucky countryside.
