With the 150th Kentucky Derby just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to rank the best horse names coming to the Sesquicentennial (or the 150th) derby.
Though there are 25 horses on the list right now, only 20 of them will actually take the track. So there is a chance one or more of these horses won’t see the track when the race begins.
10. Just Steel
Pure and simple. It’s just steel. No aluminum garbage here. Churchill Downs9. Hades
The Greek God of the Underworld should absolutely make it on this list, and he would’ve been higher if some of these names weren’t so interesting. Churchill Downs8. Society Man
George Costanza, how did you make it on this list? “You know, we’re living in a society! We’re supposed to act in a civilized way!” Churchill Downs7. T O Password
Another way to make it on the list is if you’re just strange for no good reason. What does the “T” and the “O” stand for? Why is this horse a password? Churchill Downs6. Track Phantom
Cool, sleek naming can do wonders for a spot on a top 10 list. Go get ‘em, Track Phantom. Churchill Downs5. Just A Touch
Just A Touch of what? Of freedom? Winning? Who knows, but Just A Touch is still such a cool name even with the hint of mystery. Churchill Downs4. Catching Freedom
Just America at its finest here. This horse has the actual best odds to win on this entire list at 12-to-one. Churchill Downs3. Grand Mo The First
What a lineup so far. But you’ve got to wonder what’s going to happen to Grand Mo The Second. Churchill Downs2. Mystik Dan
I wish I could have a beer with Mystik Dan. It feels like he has stories to tell. Churchill Downs1. Uncle Heavy
Uncle Heavy brings a vibe to the race you could only find at cookouts. Just pure fun. You know he probably won’t win, but it’s fun to have him there nonetheless. Churchill DownsSee which horses we like the most going into the 150th Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs
