The Kentucky Derby Festival lineup will feature a new, “illuminating” experience this year.
On April 29, the Water Lantern Festival will debut at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville at Waterfront Park, bringing an interactive, glowing show to the Ohio River’s banks.
Before releasing their lanterns onto the water at dusk, participants are encouraged to make and customize their own lanterns by adding messages, artwork, or tributes. The organizers promise a visually arresting and emotional experience focused on introspection, hope, and connection as the lanterns float across the river.
The Water Lantern Festival is renowned for fusing art and mindfulness, and it travels to cities all over the nation. Before lowering their lanterns into the water, participants frequently use the occasion to jot down dreams, memories, or messages to loved ones.

The event is intended to be family-friendly as part of the Derby Festival’s Fest-a-Ville; however, organizers point out that anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.
A lantern kit and a 2026 Pegasus Pin, a Derby Festival collectible, are included with every ticket. Pets, outside food, and beverages are not allowed at the event, and advance purchase is required, according to organizers.
The addition of the Water Lantern Festival, which is set against the backdrop of the Ohio River at sunset, signifies a more contemplative, communal offering within the traditionally exciting Derby Festival schedule—giving attendees a more subdued, intimate way to participate in one of Louisville’s most recognizable seasonal celebrations.
