I’m already over this rain. With gray skies and rain roll across the Louisville area, it’s actually the perfect time to start looking ahead to spring traditions.

The annual Kentucky Derby Festival is only weeks away, and the multi-week celebration leading up to the Kentucky Derby will bring jubilation and fun (hopefully in the sun).

Based on the festival’s typical schedule and long-running signature events, here are some of the 2026 Derby Festival happenings locals can start thinking about (and daydream of going to in the midst of this dreary rain).

Thunder Over Louisville

The unofficial kickoff to Derby season remains one of the largest annual fireworks shows in North America. Thunder combines a massive choreographed fireworks display with an afternoon air show along the Ohio River waterfront. Crowds typically pack both sides of the river in Louisville and Jeffersonville for the spectacle.

Pegasus Parade

Marching bands, giant inflatables, equestrian units, and elaborate floats roll down Broadway in one of the festival’s most family-friendly traditions. The parade has been a Derby Festival staple for decades and often features celebrity grand marshals and themed floats.

Great BalloonFest

Held over several evenings, this event fills the sky with colorful hot-air balloons. Signature components usually include:

  • Balloon Glow (balloons illuminated at night)
  • Balloon Race
  • Balloon Rush Hour Race

It’s one of the most photogenic Derby Festival traditions.

Great Steamboat Race

Historic riverboats compete on the Ohio River in a spirited race that dates back to the 1960s. Thousands line the waterfront to watch the boats steam upriver before turning back toward Louisville.

Waterfront Park

Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront

This multi-day riverfront festival features:

  • live music
  • local food vendors
  • family activities
  • nightly entertainment

Chow Wagon

Operating alongside Fest-a-Ville, the Chow Wagon brings together food trucks, regional vendors, and live music performances. For many locals, it’s the easiest way to sample festival vibes without committing to a single ticketed event.

Derby Festival Marathon and MiniMarathon

Thousands of runners hit the streets for the marathon and half marathon routes, which include a unique lap inside Churchill Downs. The races are among the largest annual running events in Kentucky.
