In honor of National Poetry Month, and in solidarity with our human family in the Ukraine, Carmichael’s is proud to present a Celebration of Ukrainian Poetry.
The war happening in Ukraine has piqued the interest of the world. The implications for those in Ukraine, and the potential for the conflict to become a globally-involved one is great.
Carmichaels Bookstore feels it is important to do their part and to stand with the people fighting to preserve their democracy in Ukraine.
May the beauty of the word prevail over oppression and violence.
This event will be hosted on Thursday, April 14 at Carmichaels Frankfort Avenue location by Nadiia Lypova, Ph.D, research associate, hematology and oncology department, UofL School of Medicine. Lypova was born in Sumy, Ukraine and lived for 10 years in Kyiv, Ukraine, before moving to Louisville in 2014.
From the website:
Some topics Lypova will discuss in this exploration of contemporary and traditional Ukrainian poetry include:
-
How words in poetry helps to cross the language borders and keeps the poetry contemporary through the time.
-
Why Ukrainian poetry is presented by this specific list of poets in the USA. Poems will be read in both languages for the audience to see the rhythm and rhymes and how it gets converted when you change the language.
-
How the environment brings new meanings and metaphors to the published poetry.
-
How Ukrainian poets celebrated international poetry day on March 23.
-
And, finally, how the poetry which is already published is describing the current situation in Ukraine. And I will read something that overlaps with my personal experience and with what my family is going through.
-
Q&A and group discussion to follow.
