‘Completely Inappropriate Tour’ at The Bard’s Town

She’s a Southern belle with a mouth like a sailor — and some rather unladylike stories to boot. Nashville native Sarah Fye has a mind for comedy that few can match. She is known mostly for her personal material based on true anecdotes from her own life that run the gamut from risqué to flat-out raunchy. She was recently involved with the pilot “Trouble,” which was awarded Best Writing at NYTV Fest 2014 and Best Drama at the Independent TV Festival 2015. Fye will be performing this weekend at The Bard’s Town.

LEO: We’re really excited for the show.

Sarah Fye: Me too! I love Louisville, I used to go there as a kid with my family. I don’t know why, I’ve just always been drawn to it. It’s such a beautiful little city, and I love that so much of it has been preserved with all of those old homes, and I love that there’s just such a sense of community. It’s very American, and I love that.

LEO: Are there any places you like to hit when you’re here?

SF: I was actually there with a friend last week, and we went to Gralehause. The Highlands is the coolest area, that strip of Bardstown Road is just like awesome store after coffee shop after restaurant. It’s such a neat little place, and I love that it’s mostly locally owned.

LEO: You started doing ballet, what was more scarring stand-up or ballet?

SF: Stand-up (laughs). Stand-up is brutal. I don’t even know how I got involved in it! Dance was kind of like a therapy for me, because I was never going to be a professional dancer. Let’s face it — I am voluptuous woman. I’ve never been a stick, and I like to eat a cheeseburger. There was nothing about me that was ever going to be a professional dancer. I loved dancing, I was a great dancer, but I didn’t love it enough to give up the rest of my life for it.

LEO: Do you believe the old adage that all comedians are damaged in some way?

SF: I haven’t met any that aren’t, but I believe any performer is sort of damaged in some way. It’s not an easy path to choose. But then again what human being isn’t damaged? Who comes up perfectly? Everyone has a scar or something they’re hiding, we just put ours out front.

LEO: How much of your material is true vs. exaggeration for laughs?

SF: I’d say 95 percent of what I say is absolutely true. The show is titled ‘Completely Inappropriate,’ and it is, so that means that 95 percent of my life is inappropriate (laughs). I just can’t write anything unless it’s the truth.

LEO: Was there ever a time it was hard to be that personal on stage?

SF: No, that’s natural to me. I am who I am — I’m not offended by anything, and not much of anything makes me mad. So I have to be careful because not everyone is like me; some people take things very personally. See, I’m a nice person. I’m not a good person, but yeah, I’m an open book. There’s nothing I won’t talk about with strangers.
