Friday, February 28th, 2025 marks the return of the Black Recharge Hair Show, a unique celebration of Black beauty, expression, and community. This renowned hair showcase explores themes of Afro-futurism, cultural pride, and Black hair as a form of resistance, all while raising funds for food justice initiatives.

The event will be hosted by WLKY’s Alexis Mathews at The Whirling Tiger, with sponsorships from Heaven Hill and Michter’s in partnership with Sister’s Song. The evening will begin at 6pm with a VIP Cocktail Hour, followed by a General Admission Cocktail Hour at 7pm, and the show will kick into action at 8pm. Beyond the hair showcase itself, the event will feature live painting performances from Ashya Watkins and Kayla Green, a local influencer panel hosted by “The Hair Psychologist” Dr. Afiya Mbilishaka, music and spoken word performances, vendor booths, and more! Additionally, artist Gee Horton has donated two pieces to be sold at the event in support of food justice initiatives. Further information on the Black Recharge Hair Show is detailed below:

A Showdown of Skill & Creativity: Stylist Competition Categories

Talented stylists will battle for top honors in four categories, each with a $500 grand prize winner and a $250 runner-up prize, plus a surprise giveaway:

● Old School New School – A fusion of two eras of hair fashion, where competitors either split styles on one model or style two models to represent past and present trends.

● Creative Cuts – A celebration of bold, short hairstyles, intricate fades, sharp beard sculpting, and edgy pixies that push the boundaries of classic haircuts.

● Natural Hair Showcase – A tribute to the beauty of natural textures, including curls, coils, locs, and braids, embracing authenticity and creativity.

● A La Carte – The ultimate category for avant-garde designs featuring futuristic, food-inspired hair creations using weaves, wigs, bold colors, and geometric artistry.

A Night of Culture, Music & Performance

The Black Recharge Hair Show is more than a competition—it’s a full cultural experience. The night features dynamic performances from:

● @carterdrillteam – The only Drill Team program in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS).

● Kyunderground – A powerhouse label and artist management collective.
