March is the perfect time to get outside and stretch your legs—or spin your bike wheels—along some of the picturesque greenways and paved trails in the Louisville area as winter begins to fade and the first signs of spring finally appear.

There are plenty of locations to enjoy the outdoors before summer crowds arrive, from riverfront routes with views of the skyline to shaded park loops and ambitious regional trail systems.

These are a few of the top paved paths and greenways to discover this month.

Louisville Loop

The Louisville Loop, one of Louisville’s most ambitious outdoor initiatives, aims to connect parks, neighborhoods, and neighboring counties with a network of more than 100 miles of paved trails. Now that about 25% of the loop is finished, bicyclists and pedestrians can travel almost 25 miles on multipurpose pathways.

Some of the most picturesque sections connect historic neighborhoods and green areas, while others run along the Ohio River and through the Floyds Fork Parklands. The Loop offers some of the region’s longest continuous bike and walking routes, even in its unfinished state.

Ohio River Greenway

The Ohio River Greenway, located in Southern Indiana, offers some of the best views of Louisville’s skyline. The riverfront communities of Jeffersonville, Clarksville, and New Albany are connected by the paved multi-use path, which is perfect for leisurely strolls by the water, long walks, and bike rides.

Green areas, river views, and convenient access to sites like the Big Four Bridge and Falls of the Ohio State Park can all be found along the route.

Beargrass Creek Greenway

Roughly 1.2 miles along Beargrass Creek, this short but serene paved path provides a convenient ride or stroll near the city. The route is ideal for novices, casual riders, or families seeking a short outdoor excursion because it is largely level.

The trail is still a vital component of Louisville’s expanding greenway network, even though some sections are periodically being built as improvements are made.

Waterfront Park Perimeter Loop

The Waterfront Park loop is a local favorite if you want expansive views without venturing outside of downtown. Views of Louisville’s bridges, river traffic, and public art can be found along the 2.2-mile paved trail that circles the park along the Ohio River.

The historic Belle of Louisville and Louisville Slugger Field are two other notable locations along the route.

Seneca Park Loop

The Seneca Park loop provides a 1.2-mile paved path that circles the park close to Bowman Field for a quick getaway into nature without having to leave the city.

Walkers, runners, and casual cyclists will find the level trail ideal, and you might even see small planes taking off close by.

Iroquois Park Scenic Loop

One of Louisville’s most exquisite Olmsted-designed parks is traversed by this 3.3-mile paved loop.

The trail features rolling hills, wooded areas, and overlooks with expansive views of the surroundings.

It’s one of the best spots in the city to observe the changing of the seasons in early spring because of the combination of open spaces and forests.

Waverly Park Trail Loops

Waverly Park offers a number of looping trails, such as Twisting Bends Loop (2.2 miles), Clinic Loop (2.5 miles), and the more difficult Fresh Air Loop (3 miles), for cyclists seeking a slightly more strenuous workout. For riders seeking a little challenge, these trails are popular because they have more elevation changes than most urban greenways.

March’s mild temperatures make it the perfect time to explore these greenways!
