Carlos Gamez de Francisco is the 2009-2010 “Dreammakers” artist-in-residence at the Muhammad Ali Center (www.alicenter.org).
New Albany has announced the artists who will begin its Bicentennial Public Art Project (www.nabpublicart.org). The multi-year outdoor exhibition of 20 temporary sculptures will start in the spring of 2010. Works by Valerie Sullivan Fuchs, John King, Brad White, J. Daniel Graham and Leticia Bajuyo will be installed in the downtown historic district. Each year, five new sculptures will be unveiled, culminating in 2013 with New Albany’s Bicentennial Commemoration.
Kaviar Forge & Gallery (www.craigkaviar.com) is now offering tours of its blacksmith shop on Fridays at 2 p.m. The tour includes an introduction to the history of blacksmithing, discussion of Craig Kaviar’s work, as well as visits to the forge and gallery. The cost is $10.
The Kentucky Arts Council (www.artscouncil.ky.gov) has a new monthly newsletter. A.R.T. (Artist Resources and Tips) is a free, subscriber-based, monthly electronic newsletter for individual artists of all disciplines. This publication serves as a clearinghouse for regional, national and international opportunities and contains up-to-date information about Kentucky Arts Council grants, programs and training available to Kentucky’s individual artists.
Art Sparks Interactive Gallery at the Speed Art Museum (www.speedmuseum.org) has reopened. It was closed for repairs due to flooding.
Presentation Academy’s new Arts & Athletic Building has been named Louisville’s best new landmark in a contest sponsored by Broken Sidewalk, a Louisville blog covering urbanism, architecture and transportation (brokensidewalk.com). Other top vote-getters were Chamberlain Pointe, Zir Med Tower, St. Mary’s Academy and the Lincoln Memorial.
