The 2009 recipients of the Governor’s Awards in the Arts (www.artscouncil.ky.gov) have been announced. Louisville-area winners are musician Harry Pickens, songwriter Chilton Price, Liquor Barn and theater critic Judith Egerton. Other recipients are arts leader Jerry E. Baker of Bowling Green, George Clooney, Janice Mason Art Museum in Cadiz, Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead and the city of Maysville.

The Glass Art Society’s (www.glassart.org) 40th annual “Meeting in Louisville” next year has confirmed the following glass artists will be doing demonstrations and/or giving lectures: Arlon Bayliss, Ben Edols, Richard Jolley, Stephen Knapp, Carman Lozar, Stephen Rolfe Powell, Emilio Santini, Judith Schaechter, Lino Tagliapietra and Ken vonRoenn.

Call for artists:

Art by 10 Kentucky women will be featured on billboards in Louisville from October-December. Equally Yours (www.equallyyours.org) is a multi-media event promoting local women artists and social awareness. This project, funded through a Kentucky Foundation for Women Art Meet Activism Grant, promotes art encouraging social change. Submissions are open to all Kentucky women artists and in all media. Deadline is Sept. 15.

The Kentucky Foundation for Women’s Hopscotch House (www.kfw.org) retreat is available for feminist artists and art groups. Currently they are taking requests for dates between Oct. 5-Dec. 22. Deadline is Aug. 25.

Lynn’s Paradise Café (www.lynnsparadisecafe.com) is hosting the 12th annual Ugly Lamp Contest. Categories are “born ugly,” “made ugly” and in conjunction with Actors Theatre performance of “A Christmas Story,” “the leg lamp.” Deadline is Aug. 18.

The Rivers Institute at Hanover College (www.rivers.hanover.edu) is hosting the “Great River Paint Out” on Sept. 19-20. Visit the website or call (812) 866-6846 for more information.
