Actors Theatre of Louisville will welcome a group of local high school students and recent high school graduates to collaborate with professional theatre artists for the New Voices Summer Intensive. Led by UNIVERSES for the third year in a row, the program will culminate with a performance of original music and spoken word at the Victor Jory Theater (316 W. Main St.) on Saturday, June 28.
As a rigorous multidisciplinary performing arts program, the summer intensive will combine studies in acting, singing, and movement. From Tuesday, June 17, until the culminating performance on Saturday, June 28, UNIVERSES will guide Louisville-area youth behind the scenes to create innovative original pieces.
UNIVERSES is a national ensemble theatre company founded in the Bronx, New York, in 1995. Comprised of writers and performers of color, UNIVERSES combines theater, poetry, dance, blues, jazz, hip-hop, and Spanish boleros to expand the parameters of traditional theater. Over the course of 30 years, UNIVERSES has performed at venues throughout the United States and also toured worldwide.
This summer, in collaboration with Actors Theatre of Louisville, UNIVERSES will support the next generation of theatre-makers as they take the stage. Tuition for the intensive is offered on a sliding scale, including full scholarships for many participants to ensure diversity and equity in the program.
