FRIDAY, May 6
20th Hillbilly Outfield 12202 Old Shelbyville Road $55 | 4:30 p.m. The Hillbilly Outfield is like a backyard Derby party with friends and family just with more people. The two day outdoor bash in a residential area of Middletown features a cornhole tournament, a bonfire, live music and more. Draft beer and food is included with the price of your admission, with Papa Johns served on Friday night and a full spread for lunch and dinner on Saturday.
SATURDAY, May 7
Hug a Horse Day Tribe Animal Sanctuary $20 | Noon-3 p.m. For those who dont agree with horse racing at the Kentucky Derby (for which there is good reason), Tribe Animal Sanctuary is inviting the public to enjoy a spring day with their horses and other animals, which they save from situations in which they were abused, neglected or abandoned. Tribe is home to pigs, cows, goats and more.
Vampire Nights at Birdsell Castle Birdsell Castle, Charlestown, Indiana $10 | 5-11 p.m. And now for something completely different! As Derby counter-programming, head to the renovated Birdsell Castle in Charlestown for its first of many events. Participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes of the supernatural or magical (vampires, wizards and werewolves are all welcome). There will also be music from Celtic Fae, a campfire, an open stage for performers from the audience, axe throwing, beer and a food truck. Oh, and there will still be a Derby viewing party in the castles dungeon/bar for the basic witches out there.
SUNDAY, May 8
Boujie Brunch Belle of Louisville $59.99 | 1-3 p.m. The perfect event for those nursing a Derby hangover or celebrating Mothers Day, this brunch-time river cruise along the Ohio comes with a complimentary mimosa or bloody mary, a Southern-style meal and live music.
Afro Posh: Derby Pink Carpet Affair Wiggle Room $20 | 6-11 p.m. The Derby fun doesnt have to end on Saturday. This party will feature four DJs playing R&B and AfroBeat hits. There will be food and hookah available for a price. Oh, and wear pink.
