Free Screening: Veteran UofL Strickler Hall, Room 101 Free | 5-9 p.m. In Veteran, South Koreas fourth-highest grossing film of all time, Sen Do-cheol is a detective pursuing Joe Tae-oh, a young millionaire who comes from a powerful business family. The film brings attention to the issues of corruption and social inequity. Catch the movie and participate in a discussion with Darcy Paquet, a notable film critic of Korean cinema who happens to be an Indiana University alumnus.
Indigenous Languages of the Americas Fast Class Main Library, Louisville Free Public Library Free | 6:30-8 p.m. So, youre not going to emerge from this class fluent in a Native American language, but youll probably know more about a little-discussed, but relevant subject. (As the library notes, the words raccoon, pecan, hurricane, hammock and jerky are all related to Native American languages). Karl Swinehart, an assistant professor of linguistics at UofL, will give an overview of languages of the Americas in terms of their grammatical features, address myths like Eskimo words for snow, and look at the example of hip hop among Indigenous youth in Bolivia as an example of contemporary language activism. Community Book Sale YMCA Safe Place Services Free | Noon-6 p.m. Expect thousands of books, movies and games at this book sale most only for $1 to $2. Proceeds benefit The Book Works, which supports and employs marginalized youth. A second sale takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Galentines Day 4 Louisville Block Party Handmade Boutique Donations | 6-10 p.m. What is Galentines Day? Oh, its only the best day of the year. Technically Feb. 13, Galentines Day, a holiday first celebrated on the TV show Parks and Recreation, is about honoring our female friendships and the badass women they involve. So it makes sense that Block Partys Galentines Day event is all about female empowerment, too. All-female bands, Bungalow Betty and The Delighters will perform between 7 and 9 p.m. and admission (a box of tampons, pads or a menstrual cup), helps benefit women at the Louisville Rescue Mission, Home of the Innocents and The Center for Women and Families. Beverage sales, from West Sixth Brewing, and a raffle, will go toward Girls Rock Louisville, an organization that gives girls and non-gender conforming youth confidence through music.
