Charlestown, Indiana, has once again transformed into Christmas City, a holiday wonderland perfect for families, friends and anyone looking to soak up the holiday spirit. With activities spanning Nov. 29 through Dec. 23, this year’s event promises festive lights, live entertainment, character visits and more.
The celebration began with Light Up Charlestown in November at Greenway Park. Crowds gathered to enjoy performances from local choirs and dancers, delicious food truck offerings and the highly anticipated light switch ceremony at 6 p.m., which illuminated the city in a breathtaking glow. From Greenway Park’s 55-foot Christmas tree to the animated light show at City Square, the holiday magic continues nightly through the end of the year.
Visitors to Greenway Park who tune into 87.9 FM can hear music synced to the animated lights as well.
The Family Activities Park (located at 1000 Park Street, across from Charlestown High School) is open Wednesday through Saturday evenings, 6-10 p.m., through December 21. Highlights include:
- Train Rides on the Charlestown Express: Enjoy an $8 ride through the park’s festive lights.
- Mini-Golf: A holiday twist on a family favorite for $5 per person.
- Holiday Market: Featuring a variety of vendors selling crafts, holiday décor, and unique gifts from Dec. 4–7. Some of the vendors include 1808 Candle, Happy Chicken Hideaway, and Marysville Bee.
The park also offers hot chocolate and snacks at the concession stand to keep you warm while you explore the city.
There are also free character visits at the Family Activities Park/ You can meet your favorite holiday characters between 6-10 p.m., including:
- Santa Claus: Dec. 5, Dec. 12, Dec. 19 (and Dec. 23 at Greenway Park)
- Buddy the Elf & Jovie: Dec. 6, Dec. 13, Dec. 20
- The Grinch: Dec. 7, Dec. 14 (and Dec. 23 at Greenway Park)
Plus, special events throughout the season will take place at Christmas City, including:
- Live Reindeer Visit: Dec. 23 from 6-10 p.m. at Greenway Park, alongside appearances by Santa and The Grinch.
- Jingle Bell 1K Walk/Run: Dec. 7 at 5 p.m., perfect for festive fun in costumes or ugly sweaters.
- Gingerbread & PJs: A cozy afternoon of gingerbread house building on Dec. 8. Light Up the Night
- Holiday Party: A free event on Dec. 6 for families with special needs, featuring dinner, dancing, and holiday cheer.
