What Humongous bring to the table is a unique and vibrant breath of fresh air, incorporating so wide a variety of influences that it only makes sense in the context by which it’s presented. Their newest, Miniature Pinschers, is as likely to fall into a jazz groove as it is to have a punk snarl; Humongous are unafraid to experiment as they see fit. Each track is a genre study that piles odd timings, punk vocals, keyboards and horns into a format that varies from country to punk to blues and back. Tracks like “Hook Up the Keyboard” so adeptly handle offbeat time signatures that it sounded as if the track was skipping. Subtle touches like this remind the listener that, despite the unpolished presentation, Humongous know exactly what they are doing.
