The legendarily danceable King Kong is scheduled to perform Friday at 9 p.m. at the Monkey Wrench, with burlesque troupe Cirque Airotica and DJ Matt Anthony.
Dreamland
After four years of screening movies in backyards and nightclubs, the Louisville Film Society is launching their first permanent space. The Dreamland Film Center opens Saturday with “6 Silent Films in Search of a Soundtrack,” a screening of silent films accompanied live by avant-garde psych-rockers Sapat. The two screenings, at 7 and 9 p.m., are $20 each. Tickets will be available at the door or by RSVPing to tracy@louisvillefilm.org. As a bonus, complimentary admissions will be granted to new LFS members who sign up for an annual membership. All proceeds will support the Louisville Film Society and the Dreamland Film Center.
When accordions attack
The Rudyard Kipling will host an accordion battle royale on Saturday at 7 p.m. Celtic traditionalists Keltricity will share an evening with post-jazz/post-rockers Squeeze-bot, full of unexpected instruments, surprising arrangements and plenty of smiles.
Favorite son
Ben Sollee, the most highly acclaimed cellist in Kentucky indie rock, will play at ear X-tacy on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The free, all-ages concert will also be simulcast on public radio station WFPK, 91.9 FM and on their website, wfpk.org. Sollee’s new album, Inclusions, will hit the streets on May 10. You can preorder a limited-edition version of the record, with a bonus song and print, now at bensollee.bandcamp.com.
Wedding bells
Congratulations to Amber Estes Thieneman, vocalist in The Sandpaper Dolls, and Nick Thieneman, bassist in Young Widows, on getting hitched. Estes contributes vocals to Young Widows’ new album; we look forward to more beautiful music from the couple.
